One of the most rewarding skills a guitarist can develop is chord recognition — the ability to hear a song and figure out how to play it. Whether you rely on your ear or use technology, here are all the approaches available to you.
Method 1: Use StumTube
StumTube automatically extracts and displays the chords of any song as you watch the official music video. You can see the chords change in real time, perfectly synced to the beat. It's the fastest way to go from "I want to learn this song" to actually playing it.
Just search for any song — the chord data is already there.
Method 2: Identify the Key First
Most songs use chords from a single musical key. If you can identify the key, you already know the most likely chords:
- C major: C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am
- G major: G, Am, Bm, C, D, Em
- A minor: Am, Bdim, C, Dm, Em, F, G
Listen to the song and try each chord until one sounds like "home." That's likely your root chord and the key.
Method 3: Train Your Ear
With practice, you can identify chord qualities by ear:
- Major chords sound bright and happy.
- Minor chords sound dark or melancholic.
- 7th chords sound bluesy or jazzy.
- Suspended chords sound unresolved — tense, floating.
Method 4: Slow It Down
Use a tool that lets you slow down audio without changing pitch. YouTube's built-in playback speed control (0.5× or 0.75×) makes chord changes much easier to hear.
Method 5: Common Progressions
Many songs reuse the same patterns:
- I – V – vi – IV (in C: C – G – Am – F) — used in hundreds of pop songs
- I – IV – V (in G: G – C – D) — the foundation of blues and rock
- vi – IV – I – V (Am – F – C – G) — one of the most common modern progressions
